
COLOGNE, Germany—Hello from Cologne, a city that sounds like it should effervesce with pleasant notes of flowers and old spices but is ironically subject to the same odors of every metropolis. Though, Cologne’s Lindt Chocolate Museum delivers a temporary reprieve in its confectionery and chocolate café, which overlook the Rhine River. The museum gave me and my friends several samplings of freshly-made chocolates let us delve into the international cocoa trade’s history.
The Cologne Cathedral, the tallest dual-spired church in the world, overlooks the city with medieval imposition. Inside, the dark hull is illuminated by vibrant stained glass. A gold reliquary containing bones of the Three Kings, from the nativity story, regally sits behind the altar. With 6 million visitors a year, the cathedral is Germany’s busiest landmark.
Cologne birthed the Kolsch beer, which I found out the hard way when I ordered a weizen from the waitress at Peter’s Brauhaus. She sternly looked at me and asked if I’d be ordering a Kolsch. I politely complied and enjoyed the slightly darker, more bitter beer. But when in Cologne…
